Could you ever wish for something that you’ve never seen? Have you longed for a friend that you never met? As anything in life, it becomes quite difficult to chase something that is not completely clear in your mind. We see it in business, relationships and even in our day to day lives. It’s in our nature to need to know what can be, so we can wish for it and work towards it.
The same applies to design, and you might be wondering why such a poetic statement has anything to do with it. In reality it has more to do with whether the project will move forward or it won’t. Let’s expand on this with an observable truth: from all the clients that we meet every week only the ones who understand the importance of design can move forward with their project, no matter the size, budget or pretty much anything else. And when we say move forward we mean getting a decent to a great project built.

So what is the importance of design?
Design is more than pretty sketches and floor plans, it is that activity that will give you and everyone involved in the project something to aim for and to wish for. Design is the agreement in the form of graphic representations to keep everyone (General Contractors, engineers, the city, suppliers, family, friends, etc.) properly aligned to have the building done. The more tools available to visualize the project, the better.

For further understanding, let’s take the opposite version of design and assume that it’s not granted the proper importance: A wife who wants to have a better space and talks to the husband about it, then he agrees and they spend weeks discussing budget, watching HGTV and collecting images and their Realtor’s opinion on what they should have. The end result is always frustration. Why? Because there’s no goal or even a glance of the outcome that they wish to have. There's too many generalities but no specifics.
The first and worst symptom of a project that won’t be successful is people making less of this vital first step called design.
