Is Your Accent Wall Hiding Something?

If you’ve watched any interior design shows you’ve probably heard the term “accent wall”. This wording is often used as the wall that needs to be the main character or focal point in the space, but in reality sometimes it means that the space is a bit too boring and some personality needs to be added to it. Occasionally accent walls are also used to distract the attention from less designed spaces, just like the wall that will rescue the project as the design feature when the budget is about to be reached and investment decisions need to be made. Truth be told, nobody really enjoys going to a party where someone insists on being the center of attention, instead, parties are much better when someone brings together new people and enjoys making fun moments where everyone can have a part of the attention.

Now let’s see what an accent wall really is.

At Levy Design Group we understand it as the element that will uplift the rest of the design and its main attributes. It is that design feature that will bring everything together, instead of overriding the rest of the design.

Let’s use a recent project that we designed for a Townhouse at a new waterfront development in Tampa Bay.

The starting point is always observation and data collection, from the environment, to the existing architecture and the client’s wishes, everything plays in this game.

Starting with the architectural project, we were facing a modern costal design, with clean lines and high ceilings. The floor area was not too big and height was important since townhomes are usually lived vertically. Then we had pre-selections of furniture and finishes from the clients and what they wanted to have in the space. Everything came together as the project’s data and information. Then the party started, and we jumped to the next phase (which really is the fun one) and we started creating different concepts for the space and this so called “accent wall”. Every option and every line made a difference, the space felt different, so we designed 5 options with different alternatives. All of them were good, but only one of them made the space reverberate and brought it to life.

Now, you can see the result and you can have your own opinion about wether you like it or not, but there’s absolutely no doubt that this lovely couple will have what they wanted and more.

Design has a process and only the last part can be considered fully “creative”, you need to observe, research and use the right tools. So next time someone jumps with a creative idea right off the bat, trying to make a wall more “interesting” or an “accent wall” just ask why. Why that material? Why that dimension? And if the answers are not there you’ll then know that you might be dealing with a designer or design idea that just aims to be the center of attention at the party.
