Decoding the Language of Design Build: What You Need to Know

Have you ever tried to learn a new language? It can be a tough task, especially if you’re an adult. It seems like the only possible way to do this is by going to the country where it is spoken and jump right into action, learning the most basic words, and pushing yourself to the point of no option. Is It the same for Design Build?

I have news for you:  design and building have their own language. Wow. Funny concept huh? Think about it. Maybe you’ve been talking to a General Contractor or a designer, and even if you know the basic concepts in words, once you see a set of plans everything turns into Chinese and your best hope is that both the designer and the builder are understanding each other. Maybe you’ve learned the most basic terms, and learned or figured out how to read floor plans, but that doesn’t not bring you to the point of having a fluent conversation.

The inability to communicate in this field will inevitably bring about lack of vision in the project and a growing anxiety in it.

Going to the new language speaking country could be an adventure, and so is building or renovating your house. People will be kind to you by trying to help you understand, but really, almost nobody will sit down with you and teach you years of speaking experience just to give you directions to the nearest restaurant. It is no different for design and construction.

Now we arrive at the million dollar question: is it important for you to understand everything about your project? Absolutely. The project is for you. You will pay for it and you will live in that space.

So how to achieve this understanding without endless hours of training? The answer is simple: we as designers or builders are responsible for your understanding. At Levy Design Group we have taken this task to heart. We make sure that our clients understand, and we have found that the best way to do so is the same way that kids learn (please note, our clients aren’t kids and this is by no means an attempt to label our beloved clients as lollipop suckers): with images. Every floor plan that we create comes with 3D images so the space can be understood, every design concept gets communicated with sketches, all of our final high end designs are represented in photo-realistic 3D renderings.

Unfortunately, and my apologies in advance to any French person reading this far, most General Contractors and Designers are like the French proud snob that won’t bother to listen through your accent until you’ve pulled your wallet out. But hey, you are not a tourist here, you are the president of this country, and if someone is unwilling to talk to you in a common language they should be deported. Or at least sent to jail. No, no, you are a kind president LOL. You want to work with your people, so you ask them to show you what they mean, you need these civilians, but they need to be able to talk to you.

After all, we have helped over 500 projects get properly communicated. That is thousands of pictures. And know that we believe in this principle so much that we even help other willing firms to communicate. After all, our main purpose is to help create beautiful livable spaces.

We have found the tools to make visual representations so everyone understands and peace reigns over the projects.

Please don’t hesitate to communicate to me if  you’re experiencing trouble understanding. We will help you.
