Nothing is more true than this statement when it comes to Architecture and Interior Design.
Funnily enough most people know that a good lighting design is key to achieving a great project, however almost no one has it nailed down in their home. As a matter of fact, almost everyone has discomfort with one or several lights in their own house.
Lighting design is not only about positioning the light bulbs every couple of feet so all the space gets lightened up. It is about creating an atmosphere that evolves during the day and through the night supporting specific activities along the areas.
Did you know that our eyes shift in their functionality depending on how much available light they have? Well that’s the reason why some people have trouble focusing during the dusk. There’s a long scientific explanation about this and I shouldn’t be boring you with it, but the point is, light is important.
What is good lighting design?
There are several factors to look at in this subject such as positioning, direction, intensity, color, temperature, light accents, individual lighting, natural lighting, furniture and obstructing objects, shadow casting, reflections and more.
All of the above have to play together like a symphony, giving the user the ability to perform comfortably and dynamically while living in the space.
How do you know if you have good lighting design at home or in your office?
In order to make a real critique about your space’s lighting design first you’ll need to know what you’re supposed to be doing in that space. Just take one day and night of full observation and look around evaluating it. Do you need to fight with the light switches to get the right intensity? Does your bathroom light almost blind your eyes when going at night? Do you shrink your eyes before turning on the kitchen light? Does your TV reflect an annoying bulb? The list could go forever, but make it simple and observe.
Good lighting design is worth having, and believe it or not, it can change the way that you live and perform in your space.
